I'M SAILING AWAY, TO A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY
the sun will shine, and birds will sing there everyday

It was a little after noon, the sun had begun to descend from it's highest peek in the sky and Kana was outside again, basking in the growing shade; the weather was just beginning to change from winter to spring so the cold in the air and the frost that permeated her surroundings was still very much a tangible thing. So much so that she was forced to throw on a light coat to keep from getting chills whenever she ventured outdoors on her days off. She always enjoyed going out whenever she had the chance, but the weather always seemed to be a constant hindrance to her; when it rained, snowed- even if it was a little windy out, her father was always bearing down on her not to go out.
"You'll catch your death out there!" he'd say, "I'd rather you stay inside with me on days like this- we need more time together."
Empty warnings and poor attempts at getting her to stay indoors, he knew how much she loved to be outside- about how she felt when it came to being indoors, so why-
Clunk-clunk-clunk-
Stopping, Kana lifted her head and stared down the street, letting her eyes follow after a noisy car that desperately needed a wash. With her head now raised and her senses more alerted, she gave her surroundings a casual glance; she was in uptown Kyoto, a decently busy place with it's fair share of inhabitants. She was only a little outside the neighborhood of her apartment complex, a decision she had made to prevent her father from having a panic attack if he got home from work before she got back from her walk. The area she was in was decent, there were a few dank alleyways and old buildings here and there, but for the most part everything was pretty new or in the process of being renovated; the streets weren't packed, but they were pretty crowded, even as she stood there staring off into the street that held a steady stream of traffic, she felt in the way. It had only been about a year and some change since they had moved into the apartment complex they lived in now and she still felt like something was off about the whole situation- like she was still having a difficult time adjusting.
Her life was pretty much as it had been before the incident five years ago, she went to school, her father went to work and at the end of the day they both returned home for dinner and a few quiet hours of watching television before bed; next day comes and it would be the same- eat, sleep, repeat. The only difference was it was all confined to a singular area. Her father worked in the city, she went to school in the city and they lived in the city. Not like before when they had to travel a few miles to get her to school or to get him to work; now everything was safer, contained and "less complex", as her father had put it.
Kana scoffed to herself and resumed her walk, kicking at the gravel that littered the walkways as she weaved through the civilians that seemed so content with what was happening to them. They all looked so normal, walking down the street with their business suits and 'I've got a place to be' attitudes. Who did they think they were kidding? Whatever was happening there wasn't normal, there was a war going on outside the high walls that protected them and here they were acting like nothing had changed, that the infection hadn't begun and that it wasn't currently spreading as they carried on with their normal lives.
"Not me," she mumbled this to herself and wasn't surprised to have the words swallowed by the busy sounds of the world around her. She wasn't wrong in admitting it though- she wasn't like the people she saw at school or the sitcoms that still aired on the t.v. She didn't see herself to be as fake and single minded as the rest of them, they were all pretty much deluded by their own wishful thinking.Someone else will take care of it.We can go on living our one-track lives.Someone else will fix this problem for us.
No, that wasn't Kana. She rarely if ever allowed someone else to take care of a problem for her when she was still able to do it herself. This logic wasn't always as sound when it came to relationships and any other social interactions because she didn't feel the need to rely on the little friends that she did end up making, which usually ended in her losing said friendships. Nobody wanted to be around when they weren't needed, but she supposed it was better this way. It had been her and her father ever since her mother had run off and her grandparents had passed away, so there wasn't much of a difference to her if another person disappeared out of her life, right? Not everyone was made for companionship, so maybe she was just one of those people.

IT'S NO ONE'S FAULT, I'M JUST TOO YOUNG, AND YOU'RE INSANE
