Melina sighed as the bell signaled the end of class for the day. She stood and picked up her bag, wincing slightly at the tightness of the wrap around her torso.
"Hey, Mel, you were on the news recap last night!" one girl said, walking over. "I remember seeing the broadcast of the fight with that digimon. Where's the little dragon that was with you?"
"He prefers hanging out outside," she explained. "It's too boring for Dracomon in here. And he's too distracting anyway."
"I didn't know you were a Tamer!"
"I wasn't," she said with a sigh. "Not until last month." She threw her bag over her shoulder, making sure not to make any sudden moves, and started walking toward the door. She left the classroom, leaving the other girls in her class dreaming about having digimon of their own. Melina rolled her eyes as she left the building, finding Dracomon waiting outside the front door. "C'mon, we've got guard duty," she said, walking past him. He fell into step about a foot behind her.
That fight with Baalmon had left her in the hospital for a few days, but she hadn't had any of her really valuable items on her that day. Her cell phone was an older model that wasn't really worth much anymore, and she was only fourteen after all. Like he'd expected her to have money on her? But thankfully her brother hadn't been hurt. She sighed, but it was a shallow sound. She'd had multiple fractured ribs, but only one or two completely broken, so she felt like she'd gotten lucky. And Dracomon hadn't been hurt too bad either. They'd both gotten off lucky against an enemy as strong as Baalmon.
She swiped her subway card and both Tamer and Digimon stepped onto the train. Not many people went toward the wall anymore. It'd been different when people were still coming through. Family members would go to the wall all the time to meet other family members. But now, people only went to the wall if they had to.
She looked at the message on her phone. "We're supposed to meet a guy named Griff when we get to the wall," she told Dracomon. "He's the... Head of the Guard, apparently. Seems he's here on inspections or something, and he's one of the only ones who knows the whole story about the Baalmon incident. Including my inability to do much physical activity until my ribs heal." She put her phone back into her bag. "I hope he doesn't mind that I'm coming straight from school, but that's what auntie said to do..." She sighed and leaned back against the seat, relaxing a bit before she had to start working again.
The train came to a stop about fourty minutes later at the Wall station. Melina and Dracomon were the only ones getting off, and no one else was on the platform. Except for one man standing by the stairs.
"Do you think that's him?" Dracomon asked.
"The message didn't say he'd pick us up here, so I doubt it. It's not like we're that far from where we need to be anyway," she reminded him. Just then, her phone went off. It was her aunt texting her.
I asked him to meet you at the subway station, since you are still injured. You don't need to get into fights with broken ribs.
Mel sighed and walked up to the man. "Are you Mr. Griff?" she asked, her tone polite but cold at the same time. "I'm Melina Ishigami, and this is Dracomon."
